Indonesian Ministry of Education Boosts Global Ties for Educational Research

  • The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology urged higher education institutions in Indonesia to establish additional international partnerships for research, aiming to enhance their global rankings. "The hope is to enter the world's top 200", the ministry's Director General of Higher Education Abdul Haris stated on the sidelines of the Digital Universities Asia 2024 international conference in Nusa Dua, Badung, Bali.

Haris observed that partnering with international universities is anticipated to elevate the research standards of local academics. Presently, the University of Indonesia (UI) stands as the sole institution in Indonesia ranked between 801st and 1,000th globally in 2024 according to Times Higher Education. In the Asia University Rankings 2024, UI holds a position between 201st and 250th in Asia, and it ranks 31st in the Impact Rankings 2024.

"This is a challenge because the focus is on research power; (it is) the main metric", he remarked.  At the event, UI Rector Ari Kuncoro emphasized UI's aim to break into the top 500 global rankings. Achieving this objective, according to him, necessitates partnerships with renowned international universities, including initiatives like student exchanges and collaborative research involving alumni from leading global institutions and the Indonesian diaspora.

Kuncoro stressed the importance for universities to evolve amidst disruptive changes, such as advancements in information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), automation, digitalization, and robotics. UI is hosting the Digital Universities Asia 2024 event themed "Inclusive Education for The Digital Age" in Badung from July 1-3. The conference covers various topics, including the integration of AI and other innovations in inclusive learning.
