India-Indonesia Collaboration Explored at AMU Workshop on Finance

  • The Faculty of Management Studies and Research (FMSR) of Aligarh Muslim University, in association with Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia, is organizing a one-day workshop on Alternate Banking and Finance in India and Indonesia: Exploring Pathways for Academic Collaboration.

    In his address, the chief guest, AMU Registrar Mr. Mohammad Imran (IPS), said, "Let's take small steps towards a transformative future". He urged both universities to start this collaboration with online courses, exchange programs, and summer internships. He assured that AMU would give all support and resources required to make this academic collaboration a success.

    Earlier, welcoming the participants and visiting guests from Indonesia, the Dean, Faculty of Management, Prof. Ayesha Farooq highlighted the deep cultural ties between India and Indonesia and the prospects of academic collaboration between them. She said that Green Sukuk have become game changers in Indonesia funding sustainable projects like renewable energy, infrastructure and climate resilience which bridge the gap between finance and environmental sustainability.

    Dr Siti Zulaikha, Head of the Master Programme in Islamic Economics, Universitas Airlangga, highlighted the significance of academic programme in preparing future leaders for the Islamic finance sector.

    Dr Noven Suprayogi, Head of the Institute for Advancement of Islamic Economy, Universitas Airlangga, vouched for future collaboration between AMU and Universitas Airlangga.

    Prof. Abdul Azim Islahi, Retired Professor, Islamic Economics Institute, KSA presented a conceptual overview of Islamic banking with reference to the historical contributions of Islamic scholars, and emphasized that revisiting their contributions can offer innovative solutions for modern financial challenges.

    Dr Siti Zulaikha conducted a session on the current issues of Islamic banking in Indonesia and presented an overview of the initiatives in this area taken by Universitas Airlangga.

    Dr Noven Suprayogi explained the financial reporting of Islamic banking in Indonesia, while Dr Ahmad Fadlur Rehman Bayuny, Chief, Training Division of Institute for Advancement of Islamic Economy, Universitas Airlangga, shared insights into corporate governance of Islamic banking in Indonesia,  the challenges and current issues. Dr Achsania Hendratmi, Coordinator of Business Incubator Airlangga Startup and Innovation, presented her views on consumer behaviour of Islamic banking in Indonesia.

    Dr Asad Rehman (AMU) discussed the nuances of Islamic banking in India’s backdrop.

    Later a meeting was held in the conference room of the administrative block with the delegates from University of Airlanga and AMU officials to explore the avenues of strategic collaboration between the two universities. The meeting was chaired by the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohd. Gulrez. Prof. Ayesha Farooq was the convener of the meeting. The other members who attended the meeting included Prof. Umar Farooq, Department of Electronics Engineering, Prof. Vibha Sharma, Deputy Dean Students’ Welfare, Prof. Parvaiz Talib and Dr. Asif Akhtar from the Department of Business Administration.

    Dr Ahmad Faraz Khan conducted the inaugural session of the workshop and Dr Asif Akhtar, Convener of the Workshop extended a vote of thanks. Suha Bilquis, a research scholar conducted the working session of the workshop.
