The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has partnered with Japan’s Niigata University to introduce a dual PhD program, allowing doctoral students to earn degrees from both institutions. This collaboration aims to enhance academic exchange, research opportunities, and global exposure for students in cutting-edge fields. Participants will have access to resources, faculty, and research facilities at both universities, fostering innovation and cross-cultural learning. The initiative is expected to strengthen Indo-Japanese academic ties and promote advanced research across disciplines.
The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, and Prof. Matsuo Masayuki , Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology at Niigata University. This initiative aims to enhance academic exchange, research collaboration, and global learning opportunities, strengthening Indo-Japanese ties in higher education and innovation.
Beyond academic degrees, the initiative promotes student and researcher exchange, offering access to world-class mentorship, diverse educational resources, and a global perspective. Collaborative research will focus on key areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, renewable energy, climate change, nanotechnology, earthquake engineering, robotics, biosciences, and disaster resilience. By addressing global challenges through joint efforts, the program aims to drive innovation and strengthen Indo-Japanese academic and research ties.
Prof Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, says, “This collaboration reflects our commitment to global academic engagement. The Double Degree Program will enhance students’ research capabilities and further strengthen our academic and research ties with Niigata University.”
Prof. Matsuo Masayuki, Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University, stated, “We are excited to work with IIT Roorkee on this program, which will nurture talented researchers and contribute to addressing global challenges through joint efforts.”
The Double Degree Program opens new pathways for students to engage in high-impact research and contribute to both nations’ academic and scientific communities of India and Japan.
