In collaboration with UNICEF, the BMW Group backs educational initiatives

  • The BMW Group and UNICEF have announced a long-term partnership on World Children’s Day, operating under the theme BRIDGE, which stands for "Educating young people for tomorrow". The objective is to empower the younger generation with the necessary skills and knowledge for future success. BMW Group's support aligns with UNICEF's global aim to impact over 10 million children and young people annually through education, fostering personal growth and contributing to a more stable global economy. Following its initiation in South Africa last year, the collaboration is set to expand to Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and Thailand in 2024, coinciding with the BMW Group's presence in these countries.

The primary focus of the initiative is to establish learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) because these professions play a crucial role as drivers of global economic growth. Unfortunately, a significant number of these positions are projected to remain vacant in the future due to a shortage of qualified individuals. Research indicates that this challenge is especially prominent in low- and middle-income countries, disproportionately affecting girls and women. Currently, females constitute a minority in STEM education and careers, representing only 28 percent of engineering graduates, 22 percent of AI workers, and less than one-third of the workforce in the technology sector. Collaboratively, UNICEF and the BMW Group are committed to addressing the increasing disparities in global education.

Aside from offering financial assistance, the BMW Group leverages its knowledge and worldwide connections to endorse initiatives that enhance local access to improved learning materials and appropriate educational settings. The partnership will back various programs, including the provision of laboratory resources, the creation of tailored teacher training programs, mentorship opportunities, and job-shadowing experiences. Early acquisition of essential skills will empower young individuals globally to bridge the transition from school to work, navigate the professional landscape, and actively contribute to its evolution.
