The College of Science (CSCI) hosted the 2024 International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC) – the 10th Annual International Mathematical Challenge Regional and International Final Presentation Competition for Greater China. This event highlighted the academic excellence and innovative thinking of talented secondary school students from the region.
The competition brought together finalists from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, who had progressed through demanding selection rounds to reach this prestigious stage. Participants presented their learning experiences and discoveries to a distinguished panel of judges, vying for recognition and recommendations to the International Expert Panel.
St. Paul’s Co-educational College and Diocesan Girls’ School were awarded Outstanding Awards in the Regional Round, while La Salle College, Diocesan Girls’ School, and Pui Kiu College earned Outstanding Awards in the International Round.
In his opening address, Professor Ray Cheung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning) at the Office of the Provost and Deputy President of CityUHK, underscored the importance of fostering regional talent. He highlighted how this exceptional event went beyond mere academic exercises, evolving into a pioneering mathematical challenge. It united secondary students from diverse areas to apply mathematical principles in tackling real-world issues, aligning with the global trend of innovation and technology.
The competition provided a platform for students to exhibit their mathematical abilities and encouraged cross-cultural exchange and networking opportunities. Beyond the presentation competition, participants attended a workshop at CityUHK and had the chance to explore the CityUHK campus and the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution. Students from Hong Kong showcased outstanding performance in the IMMC 2024. Congratulations to all the schools on their remarkable achievements.
