HKUST to Launch Hong Kong's Third Medical School, Focusing on Research

  • Nancy Ip Yuk-yu, the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), recently announced plans to create the third medical school in the city by mid-2027. The goal is to offer a unique American-style medical program that focuses on research and development, different from existing programs in other universities. The program aims to enroll 50 students initially, attracting graduates from various fields for a four-year 'graduate-entry bachelor's' program. To ensure high standards, applicants must pass an entry test.

HKUST's approach goes beyond traditional medical education by collaborating with a top European institution to design the curriculum, promoting global knowledge exchange. Additionally, HKUST plans to establish a 'satellite campus' near the mainland China border, emphasizing interdisciplinary education and research in areas like health, green technology, fintech, nanotechnology, and smart manufacturing.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into medical education is a key aspect of HKUST's forward-thinking approach. Philip Chiu Wai-yan, the dean of medicine at the Chinese University, mentioned plans to incorporate AI training into the curriculum, using AI and augmented reality to simulate clinical scenarios. Despite potential concerns about national security legislation, Chiu expressed confidence in the non-impact on faculty recruitment and international collaborations, emphasizing the educational and societal benefits of integrating AI into medical education.

HKUST aims to transform medical education by combining traditional methods with the latest technology and international collaboration, showcasing Hong Kong's dedication to excellence in education and research. This initiative underscores the significant role of technology in shaping the future of healthcare.
