HKGAI Reveals Advanced AI Projects at InnoEx 2024

  • The Hong Kong Generative AI R&D Center (HKGAI), a collaborative effort among universities led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), unveiled a series of AI projects during InnoEx 2024. These projects, supported by funding from the HKSAR government’s InnoHK initiative, encompass various sectors such as legal, medical, and creative fields in both Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Through its independently developed model, HKGAI showcased ten generative AI services and applications at InnoEx 2024, offering attendees firsthand experiences. These applications include an expert consultation service chatbot for real-time advice, animated sequence and composited photo creation, deep-fake detection technology, reviving legendary singers and stars, text-to-video conversion, 2D-to-3D asset creation, AI-powered office assistance, visual renderings of GBA cities, voice sample-based song rendition, and emotion-based photo diary creation.

Prof. GUO Yike, HKUST Provost and Director of HKGAI highlighted the center's achievement in developing the first locally trained foundation model supporting both Chinese and English languages. This milestone signifies Hong Kong's breakthrough in AI innovation. Prof. Guo emphasized HKGAI's commitment to leveraging its position in Hong Kong and the GBA to nurture local AI talents and address ethical, safety, and governance concerns in AI technology and applications.

HKGAI aims to harness the innovation sector's economic potential in Hong Kong and enhance its global influence in AI research and applications continually. Through its unique strengths and role, the centre seeks to promote the growth of AI expertise locally while ensuring responsible development and application of AI technologies.
