HCT Initiates an Inaugural Student-led Space Mission in UAE

  • The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) has embarked on its first student-led space mission, known as the HCT-SAT 1 project, in collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). This project involves the development of an Earth-observation CubeSat, with a unit size of 1U (10cm x 10cm x 10cm), slated for launch by the end of 2024. The partnership entails MBRSC engineers imparting comprehensive knowledge and mentorship to students across all phases of the satellite's life cycle, including design, development, assembly, testing, and operational management.

Beyond launching the satellite, the collaboration emphasizes an educational journey aimed at empowering students and faculty through specialized training and robust support in the CubeSat curriculum. Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director-General of MBRSC, expressed the centre's commitment to fostering innovation and excellence, particularly among youth in STEM fields. He highlighted the significance of engaging students in high-quality projects to inspire them and contribute to the UAE's space exploration goals. AlMarri believes that this hands-on experience will equip students with the skills needed to advance the UAE National Space Programme.

The project involves 34 HCT students from various engineering disciplines, including aviation sciences, airframe design, and electrical engineering, as well as Applied Media students focusing on marketing aspects. These students collaborate as an interdisciplinary team under the guidance and mentorship of nine dedicated HCT faculty members. The initiative represents a pivotal outcome of the partnership, aimed at equipping students with advanced knowledge in space sciences and raising awareness of the UAE's achievements in space exploration.

Furthermore, the HCT-SAT 1 project aligns with the strategic commitment of HCT to advance applied education, foster future skills, and enhance students' career prospects in key sectors. It provides passionate students with an invaluable gateway to the aerospace sector through expert-led scientific knowledge and hands-on experience. Overall, this collaboration underscores the importance of space research in driving human progress and advancing the UAE's strategic goals in space exploration.
