Georgia Tech Introduces AI Makerspace with NVIDIA

  • Georgia Tech's College of Engineering has inaugurated an artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer centre, named the AI Makerspace, exclusively dedicated to educating students. Developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, the initiative provides a digital platform for students to explore and utilize AI concepts in their academic pursuits. Described as a "digital sandbox" by college leaders, the AI Makerspace aims to democratize access to computing resources traditionally reserved for researchers and technology corporations. Initially targeting undergraduate students, the program offers online access to a computing cluster as part of their coursework, allowing them to enhance their AI proficiency through practical engagement.

The AI Makerspace seeks to equip students with essential AI skills, positioning them favourably for post-graduation endeavours as they collaborate with industry professionals and contribute to shaping the future of AI applications. At its core, the initiative comprises a dedicated computing cluster integrated with NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, facilitated by Penguin Solutions. This infrastructure serves as a virtual gateway to a high-performance computing environment.

Powered by 20 NVIDIA HGX H100 systems, housing a total of 160 NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs, the AI Makerspace boasts formidable computational capabilities. This includes the use of NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking, enabling efficient in-network computing. To illustrate the computational prowess, a single NVIDIA H100 GPU can perform a multiplication operation in one second, equivalent to a task that would take Georgia Tech's entire student body of 50,000 approximately 22 years to complete.

The launch of the AI Makerspace signifies yet another milestone in Georgia Tech's distinguished legacy of innovation and educational leadership. Leveraging NVIDIA's cutting-edge technology and expertise, students across all academic levels are provided with opportunities to make meaningful contributions and assume leadership roles in the dynamic realm of AI.
