EU Launching 24 Million Euro Basic Education Project in Iraq Soon

  • In collaboration with Iraq's Ministry of Education, the European Union has unveiled plans for a 24-million-euro initiative aimed at advancing basic education in the country over a four-year period. Ambassador Thomas Sailer, representing the European Union in Iraq, announced the initiative during an International Women's Day celebration.

Sailer affirmed the commitment to international principles, particularly in empowering women across various sectors such as work, companies, the military, and the police, with ongoing collaboration with the government to overcome obstacles. During the International Women's Day celebration, Ambassador Thomas Sailer underscored the significance of collaboration to ensure human and women's rights, especially in light of increased violence against women during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He emphasized the necessity of forming teams dedicated to empowering women and obtaining reliable data for women's rights, political inclusion, and implementation. Additionally, the ambassador highlighted the impending launch of a 24-million-euro basic education initiative in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, slated to enhance basic education in Iraq over the next four years.

The program, set to commence within the next few weeks, aims to work closely with the Iraqi government in developing curricula and bolstering teacher capabilities and methodologies. Expressing his contentment with collaborating with the government and Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani, Ambassador Sailer stressed the importance of integrating women's rights and basic education into mainstream thinking for both girls and boys. He mentioned ongoing cooperation with the Supreme Council for Women as part of these efforts.
