Cusat collaborates with POSTECH, South Korea

  • Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has forged a partnership with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), South Korea, to investigate the effects of air pollution on human health. This collaboration, secured under the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC), initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, aims to enhance the research environment of Indian higher education institutions by facilitating joint projects with renowned foreign counterparts.

Lead investigators Prof. Usha K. Aravind from Cusat's School of Environmental Studies and Prof. Taiha Joo from POSTECH will spearhead the project. Utilizing various biophysical techniques, including in vitro experiments, the program seeks to unveil the underlying biological mechanisms impacted by air pollutants on human health.

Meanwhile, Cusat's research proposal on human rights issues in sports has received approval from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Titled ‘A study on the mechanisms adopted by sports bodies to combat human rights abuse and an examination of the legal policy framework along with the status of implementation in Kerala,’ the project is led by Dr. Ajith Mohan, Deputy Director and Head of the Department of Physical Education.

The NHRC has allocated ₹11.6 lakh for one year of research. The team will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the strategies employed by sports organizations to address human rights violations, with a specific focus on Kerala.

In summary, these initiatives signify Cusat's commitment to advancing research endeavours in diverse fields, ranging from environmental studies to human rights advocacy in sports. Through international collaborations and institutional support, Cusat aims to contribute significantly to scientific knowledge and societal well-being.
