China Enhances Doctoral Education: New Guidelines Focus on Science, Engineering

  • China has announced its decision to further develop its programs for earning doctorates in science, engineering, agriculture and medical sciences.

The set of guidelines to deepen the comprehensive reform of doctoral education recently unveiled by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council will also spur the development of doctoral programmes in basic and emerging disciplines and in interdisciplinary fields. Professional doctoral programmes shall form an increased proportion, said the guidelines.

They also pledge themselves to even greater efforts in speeding up construction work in disciplines relating to key fields, encouraging interdisciplinary integration, and exploring new avenues for international exchange and cooperation.

Last month, the Ministry of Education declared that top overseas universities with particular emphasis on science and engineering will be encouraged to run joint education programs with their peers in China.

It added that the country intends to support the development of the top universities in their expansions of education capacities, and to form several advanced research universities.
