At the Ministry’s headquarters, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, and Sport, met with H.E. Sardar Umar Alam, leading a delegation from UNESCO Cambodia, for a courtesy visit and work discussion. The conversation centered on the AI Competency Framework in education, with senior ministry officials and relevant stakeholders in attendance.
During the meeting, H.E. Sardar Umar Alam congratulated the Ministry on the successful organization of Cambodia’s first EdTech Summit and Exhibition. He also reiterated UNESCO’s commitment to continuing its collaboration with the Ministry to advance technological innovations and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. Alam emphasized UNESCO’s role in supporting education to ensure that both teachers and students in the 21st century acquire essential digital skills, particularly in utilizing AI ethically and effectively to improve learning outcomes in the digital age.
In response, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron commended and thanked UNESCO for its support in organizing the first EdTech Summit in Cambodia. He highly valued UNESCO’s vision of strengthening collaboration with the Ministry in integrating technology and AI in teaching and learning to improve education quality. He also outlined the Ministry’s vision of leveraging AI for education, including training teachers using AI to support early numeracy and literacy, fostering students’ critical thinking and creativity, enhancing digital literacy, developing educational content, and expanding the implementation of STEM education.
Furthermore, the Deputy Prime Minister encouraged UNESCO to support and strengthen key areas in education, such as developing and preparing a digital library, utilizing technology to enhance PISA assessments, and conducting regional studies. He emphasized the need to establish a clear framework for using AI to support teacher training in Cambodia. He also noted that for AI and education to be effectively developed, newly trained teachers must possess strong digital competencies, including the ability to create engaging and high-quality learning content within a short timeframe.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron expressed appreciation to UNESCO for its continued support in the education sector, particularly in integrating AI to align with the digital age. He highlighted the crucial role of adopting AI in both teaching and learning, especially in curriculum development and specialized fields. Dr. Naron emphasized that AI will bring profound changes to the world, especially in education, and stressed the importance of being well-prepared for this transformative shift.
