Brunei's Minister of Foreign Affairs II, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, presented a forward-thinking proposal during the 20th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting. The plan involves establishing a diplomatic academy to strengthen the country's foreign service capabilities, addressing the need for suitable facilities, experienced diplomats, and sustainable funding.
Responding to queries from LegCo member Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister elaborated on key aspects of the academy's formation. This includes identifying an optimal venue for fostering diplomatic excellence and the imperative of attracting and retaining skilled diplomats. The government's commitment to investing in its people is highlighted, ensuring that Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) personnel receive training in leadership, negotiation, public speaking, consular affairs, protocol, administration, and finance.
At the core of the academy's mission is the enhancement of capacity building for MFA personnel. The proposed curriculum aims to cover a wide range of diplomatic skills, from general leadership and negotiation to specialized areas like consular affairs and protocol. This comprehensive approach seeks to equip Brunei's diplomats with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of international relations and diplomacy effectively.
The establishment of a diplomatic academy marks a significant achievement in Brunei's continuous efforts to fortify its diplomatic corps. By nurturing a group of highly skilled diplomats, Brunei aspires to elevate its global standing, advance its interests, and strengthen both bilateral and multilateral relationships. This strategic investment in human capital reflects Brunei's forward-looking foreign policy approach and its dedication to actively participating in global affairs.
