British Council PH Marks 45 Years: Strengthens Education and Culture

  • The British Council in the Philippines recently marked a significant milestone by celebrating 45 years of dedicated efforts to strengthen educational and cultural connections between the UK and the Philippines. The grand event, themed "Committed Connections," took place at The Blue Leaf Events Pavilion in Taguig City, bringing together partners, grantees, scholars, and stakeholders to acknowledge the enduring relationships and collaborations established since its establishment in 1978.

Over its presence in the Philippines, the British Council has become a central force in promoting collaboration, exchange, and progress in education, arts and culture. According to Lotus Postrado, the country director, the organization's impact on cultural relations and international education has been substantial, influencing policy and individual lives through various initiatives and programs. Notable accomplishments include partnering with the Design Center of the Philippines on a design economy mapping project and contributing to the Transnational Higher Education (TNHE) Law, which has significantly influenced the educational landscape in the country.

The celebration also featured the inaugural Study UK Alumni Awards, recognizing the outstanding achievements of Filipino alumni who pursued higher education in the UK. Awardees such as Bryan San Juan, Rowena Candice Ruiz, Josephine Ambalada, and Catherine Rose Ballo were acknowledged for their contributions to environmental law, innovative government procurement, special education and mental health, and art education, respectively. These awards underscore the British Council's commitment to acknowledging and supporting Filipino talent and accomplishments globally.

Looking towards future growth and development, the British Council in the Philippines aims to continue fostering its relationship with the Filipino community through various opportunities. Designating the Philippines as a 'super-priority' country for 2024, Summer Xia, the Southeast Asia lead for the British Council, highlighted the nation's crucial role in the ASEAN strategy and the UK-ASEAN Dialogue Partnership. This strategic focus is poised to strengthen trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the UK and the Philippines, reinforcing their enduring partnership.
