Sanon Wangsrangboon, the Deputy Governor of Bangkok, launched a workshop on student assessment at Wat Phraya Suren School in Khlong Sam Wa District. The workshop, attended by 105 staff members from 35 schools under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), focuses on the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) method.
The goal of the workshop is to explore new educational approaches that emphasize developing student competencies. These methods aim to better prepare students for a rapidly changing world. Sanon praised the teachers for participating and encouraged them to face the challenges ahead. He stressed that building a better city requires collaboration across sectors, including education.
Sanon also highlighted the importance of providing education to all children, including those of migrant workers from neighboring countries. "If we bring them into the school system, which is a safe space, our city will be safer", he stated. He emphasized that education helps develop people who can contribute to the city's growth.
The Deputy Governor also pointed out that global data shows it typically takes seven generations for people to break out of poverty, but it may take up to 11 generations for Thailand. Therefore, he believes that education must be flexible and focus on skills like critical thinking, lifelong learning, and both vocational and life skills to help students succeed in the 21st century.
Teachers at the workshop were tasked with creating assessment tools based on the CBA principle. They also presented ways to integrate the approach into subjects like mathematics, science, Thai, and English. This method gives students opportunities to apply their knowledge to real-world problems, helping them think critically and assess their learning.
Sanon assured teachers that they would receive support to drive this transformative change in education.
