ASHS Grade 11 Researchers Wins Bronze at SEAMEO Congress in Malaysia

  • A team of 11 students from Ateneo de Manila Senior High School (ASHS) representing the Philippines clinched the bronze medal for the Outstanding Award for Presentation at the 13th Regional Congress Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists (SSYS) held on June 14, 2024, in Malaysia. Dani Santos, Matt Albuquerque, Leigh Amante, Leaf Apsay, Arianne Co, Amber Luneau, Gab Repe, and Adrian Te were honored for their research titled "Assessing the Water Quality of Tullahan River: Investigating Physicochemical Characteristics and the Presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli)." They were accompanied in Malaysia by ASHS faculty members Tin Santiago and research adviser Gabe Eslava.

    Also in Malaysia was a team of students from 11-Tsuji who presented their study, “Analysis and Comparison of Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) to Other Grass Genera for Landslide Mitigation and Sustainable Erosion Control”. The team composed of Aless Bajarias, Rosanne Diaz, Hans de Asis, Rosanne Diaz, Hans de Asis, Celine Chua, Fernando Dela Cruz, Shannen Lupenna, Raphael Reyes, and Sharize Tañada qualified and presented at the congress.

    SEAMEO's Regional Congress Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists (SSYS), hosted annually by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), draws participants from across Southeast Asia. This year, students from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam convened at SEAMEO's Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM), a leading institution for science and mathematics education. The congress serves as a platform for young scientists to showcase research projects that integrate STEM concepts with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting initiatives aimed at fostering a healthier and more sustainable future for humanity and the environment.
