50 Inmates at BJMP-Romblon Begin Solar Panel Installation Training

  • At least 50 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Romblon District Jail have started an exciting new training program on photovoltaic (solar panel) system installation. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to equip inmates with valuable skills that will not only help them reintegrate into society but also contribute to national goals of promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Local trainers from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Romblon National Institute of Technology (RNIT) are conducting the free training, aimed at providing the PDLs with knowledge and hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems. This course is designed to give participants practical skills that are highly sought after in today’s growing green energy sector.

According to Mimaropa Regional Information Officer Joefrie Anglo, the program is an important step toward strengthening the technical expertise of the PDLs. He emphasized that this effort not only prepares them for future employment but also supports BJMP’s broader mission of developing a skilled workforce to meet the country’s energy needs. He also pointed out that this initiative supports the government's push for energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The training is conducted inside the jail facility, providing inmates with the opportunity to gain expertise without needing to leave the facility. Upon successful completion of the 311-hour training program, participants will be awarded a national certificate as solar technicians, making them more competitive in the job market. This hands-on approach to learning is a crucial part of the program’s success.

Acting district warden, Jail Inspector Fatima Rabino, stressed the significance of the program in helping reduce electricity costs for the facility, while also offering inmates a chance to be part of the 'green jobs' movement. She expressed hope that this partnership will grow, inspiring more PDLs to pursue careers in the renewable energy sector and contribute to the nation’s sustainability goals. This program is a great example of how education and skill-building can help transform lives and create positive impacts for both individuals and communities.
