Indonesia is one of the largest higher education systems in the world, with a vision of developing world-class universities with promises of further affordable and quality education to a rapidly growing population. So far, the country has made tremendous progress regarding free universal primary and secondary education, putting it in line toward realizing the Education Millennium Development Goal. Indonesia has the challenging task of keeping up with the increasingly high demand for quality higher education, most of whose students are youngsters. Currently, over 80% of the education budget is channeled into basic and secondary education, which leaves relatively few resources for universities and colleges preparing students for competitive careers in the global economy.

There is also an emerging number of respectable Indonesian universities that thrive to provide different kinds of programs for both domestic and international students. Initially in Yogyakarta, then Jakarta, and finally Bandung, these institutions would spread across the country. Each contributes to the growth of this country and maintains an international standard of academics through research, innovation, and involving engagement in the community.

At once, Indonesia is experiencing a great transformation of public administration and governance education. The country's institutions are getting stronger with standards and programs to fit the complex and modern needs of society. Thus, with regional autonomy, economic development, and sustainable governance, which are key challenges to the country, it became apparent that urgent demands were made for public administrators and leaders. Institutions that focus on public administration and governance are now embarking on efforts to equip their students with relevant skills and knowledge that can ultimately translate into meaningful contributions to the country's public sector.
