Tata Memorial Centre Revolutionizes Neurosurgery with Advanced Ultrasound Tech

  • The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Mumbai has significantly advanced its neurosurgical capabilities with the acquisition of the revolutionary intraoperative Ultrasound (iUS) machine known as the bKActiv. Led by Dr. Aliasgar Moiyadi, the TMC neurosurgery team has emerged as a pioneering force globally in utilizing iUS technology, a milestone achievement in Indian medical history.

The iUS technology is a game-changer for performing intricate brain tumour surgeries, offering cost-effective solutions and enhancing surgical precision. When integrated with navigational systems akin to a ‘surgical GPS’, and advanced brain mapping techniques, iUS empowers surgeons to meticulously excise tumours while preserving critical brain functions. Unveiled at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, the event was a congregation of esteemed personalities including Dr. Shailesh Shrikhande, Dr. Aliasgar Moiyadi, and Shri Chaitanya Sarawate of Wipro GE Healthcare South Asia, alongside TMC’s dedicated staff.

Dr. Moiyadi is hopeful that the bKActiv iUS system will greatly assist his team in caring for a large population of brain tumor patients, especially those who face barriers to accessing affordable, state-of-the-art treatment. The iUS system's affordability sets it apart from other intraoperative imaging methods, making it a valuable asset for healthcare facilities operating within resource-constrained environments.

TMC's dedication to exceptional healthcare extends beyond its premises. The neurosurgery department leads training programs for neurosurgeons globally, promoting the adoption of iUS-guided surgeries. This effort is anticipated to extend the advantages to a wider patient population throughout India. The acquisition of this cutting-edge equipment was facilitated by a generous grant from UBS, a gesture that TMC sincerely appreciates. This support plays a crucial role in strengthening TMC's commitment to providing top-tier cancer care to the people of India.

At the launch, Shri Sarawate expressed Wipro GE Healthcare’s dedication to developing technologies that enhance surgical outcomes. “Our collaboration with TMC is a testament to our commitment to healthcare innovation, and the bkActiv Ultrasound system is set to redefine the standards of neurosurgery in India”, he stated, marking a new era in medical technology advancement.
