The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) - NPTEL is set to launch seven new online courses in the field of Sports Science, responding to its burgeoning growth in India. These courses will be available for free online enrollment. The aim of these comprehensive online programs is to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications in Sports Science. Specifically tailored for the Indian and South Asian physique and cultural context, these courses are designed to cater to these specific demographics. The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) was established in 2003 by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati, and Roorkee) in conjunction with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
Professor Andrew Thangaraj, Coordinator at NPTEL, IIT Madras, emphasized the significance of these courses, noting that this comprehensive curriculum will significantly impact India's sports landscape. The courses are tailored to meet India-specific sports requirements, fostering a well-rounded approach. Given the rapid expansion of competitive sports in India, there is a notable demand for skilled professionals across various sports disciplines. These NPTEL courses aim to equip learners with the knowledge to enhance athletic performance, monitor dietary habits and training frequencies, develop recovery programs, and provide a holistic understanding of sports science.
The introductory NPTEL course in Sports Science, requiring a minimum Class XII qualification, is recommended for individuals interested in exploring this burgeoning field. These courses cater to students pursuing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sports Sciences, Physiotherapy, Physical Education, and related disciplines. Upon completion, students can further their education by pursuing Diplomas or Postgraduate degrees in these specialized areas. The Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics at IIT Madras has introduced these courses within this domain.
