German Stem Cell Expert Boosts Sino-German Health and Education Cooperation

  • A notable German delegation, spearheaded by the renowned stem cell expert Prof. Dato' Sri Dr. Mike Chan, recently completed a three-day visit to Baoding, China. This visit represents a key milestone in international health cooperation and follows a reciprocal visit from Chinese officials to Germany in June. The focus of these meetings has been on advancing collaboration in stem cell research, biotechnology, health, and medical education. Prof. Chan, the founder of the European Wellness Biomedical Group (EW Group), is a leading figure in stem cell research. Under his guidance, the EW Group has gained international acclaim for its pioneering work in precursor stem cell therapeutics, immunomodulation, and biological regenerative medicine.

The visit, coordinated by Michel Schumann, Chairman of the BWA, concluded with the signing of five agreements focused on health and educational cooperation, oral medicine, cell therapy technology, medical rehabilitation, and elderly care. The delegates were warmly received by prominent officials in Baoding, including Municipal Party Committee Secretary Dang Xiaolong, Deputy Secretary and Mayor Yan Jihong, and Meng Qing Yu, Vice-President of Hebei University.

During their visit, the German delegation toured schools and a children’s hospital, engaging with students, teachers, and medical staff to advocate for careers in biotechnology and medical research. Chinese officials expressed significant interest in Prof. Chan’s innovative technology for treating children with special needs, such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and global developmental delays. Prof. Chan is especially renowned for his work with targeted organ and brain-specific precursor stem cells, having developed over 400 different types. Dang Xiaolong highlighted the potential for valuable learning and collaboration between Chinese and German partners in this field.

A key symposium facilitated discussions on potential collaborations, with notable participants including Claus Biermann, Director of the Big Health Committee, Sebastian Schutz, General Manager of the German Federal Pharmaceutical Industry Association, and Prof. Ulrich Joos. An MOU on joint stem cell research and education collaboration was signed between the European Wellness Bio Medical Group and San Zang, witnessed by Chinese officials and the German delegation.

With over 50 international patents and authorship of more than 50 books and 100 scientific publications, two of Prof. Chan's notable works include, "Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine" and "Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Integrative Approach", cement his status as a leading authority in stem cell research and its applications in treating neurodevelopmental disorders.

Currently, Prof. Chan is collaborating with Heidelberg University in Germany on cutting-edge research into neurodevelopmental diseases. This partnership combines his expertise in stem cell therapy with Heidelberg University's renowned medical research facilities, focusing on developing innovative treatments for conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy using targeted brain-specific precursor stem cells.

As Germany and China collaborate to advance medical science and enhance healthcare systems, their joint efforts are anticipated to elevate global health standards and foster further progress in medical education, stem cell research, and traditional Chinese medicine. Dang Xiaolong remarked that the visit led to successful collaboration between academic and medical institutions, reinforcing the ties between the two countries and yielding positive results for both nations.
