Cambodia introduces new educational guidelines to elevate education quality

  • The Education Minister, Hang Chuon Naron, has called on specialized departments to enhance the effectiveness of the model school support group. The emphasis is on implementing approved standards for kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools, with the goal of improving the quality of state education. The ministry has outlined a support mechanism that includes teams for monitoring results, technical and ICT support, and coordination groups for early childhood, primary, and secondary education. Chuon Naron urged departments to create clear action plans to prevent overlap in activities or training workshops, promoting focused support for schools. He also stated, "The Department of Education Quality Assurance (EQAD) will develop standardized test guidelines for schools, starting with monthly tests and semester exams. The finance department must collaborate closely with EQAD to review and ensure a cost-effective plan".

Kong Samneang, the head of the Federation of Education Services in Cambodia, expressed positive views on the transformation of Cambodia's education system at the sub-national level. He emphasized the importance of teachers, communities, students, and school management in adhering to the ministry's guidelines to ensure educational quality at all levels, particularly at the sub-national level. In December 2023, the ministry officially initiated the implementation of model school standards in three sub-sectors, focusing on five standards: student performance, teaching and learning effectiveness, community participation, operational school management, and institutional accountability. The ministry affirmed its active efforts in implementing model school standards from kindergarten to secondary school to enhance the quality and development of public schools throughout Cambodia.

The governance of education in Cambodia is overseen by the state, with the Ministry of Education at the national level and the provincial Department of Education at the regional level. The Cambodian education system encompasses various levels, including preschool, primary, secondary, higher education, and non-formal education. It also involves the promotion of sports, education in information technology, research and development, as well as technical education.
