Mayor Yin Yong said Beijing will add 20,000 primary and secondary school seats in 2025 to meet the increasing demand for quality education. The announcement was made during the third session of the 16th Beijing Municipal People's Congress.
This comes after the city added 39,000 school seats in 2024 as part of Beijing's ongoing efforts to promote balanced and high-quality education development. The expansion is aimed at relieving the pressure on school placements and giving families more options for education.
Several districts have announced specific plans to meet the new seat target. Dongcheng district will construct the Beijing No. 5 High School Dongshi Campus, adding 4,700 secondary school seats. Xicheng district will introduce over 5,000 seats through a new educational model and enhanced resources.
In Chaoyang district, five new or expanded schools will create 6,960 additional seats, according to Dong Jian, secretary of the education working committee. Haidian district, a pioneer in group-based schooling, plans to add 7,900 seats by expanding its educational resources.
These efforts align with Beijing's vision of improving access to quality education and addressing placement challenges for its growing student population. The initiatives underscore the city's commitment to fostering a well-rounded and accessible educational ecosystem.
