Vietnam and UNESCO Expand Collaboration in Science, Culture and Education

  • Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Tran Hong Thai, held discussions with UNESCO Chief Representative in Vietnam, Jonathan Baker. Thai extended congratulations on Jonathan's commencement of work in Vietnam amid the commitment to enhance the practical relationship between Vietnam and UNESCO. This commitment was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit in November 2021. The focus of collaboration includes expanding efforts in natural sciences, culture, and education. Highlighting the improved legal framework for science and technology in Vietnam, Thai noted the passage of crucial documents in 2021, including a national strategy for research, development, and application of artificial intelligence (AI) until 2030.

Thai expressed confidence that the collaboration between Vietnam and UNESCO in the field of science and technology will play a crucial role in achieving Vietnam's socio-economic development objectives. Additionally, it will actively foster international cooperation and integration in the realms of science, technology, and innovation. The expansion of cooperation between Vietnam and UNESCO in natural sciences, culture, and education is a strategic move. Thai emphasized that participating in UNESCO-recognized science and technology centers will build trust, elevate national prestige, position Vietnam favorably, and facilitate the profound integration of Vietnamese science on a global scale.

The Deputy Minister conveyed his confidence that Baker, in his tenure in Vietnam, will actively enhance the collaborative ties between Vietnam and UNESCO, particularly in fields such as natural sciences, oceanography, water security, biodiversity, water resource management, sustainable development, and climate change response. In response, Baker acknowledged UNESCO's role as a key multilateral organization offering recommendations on significant contemporary issues, including ethical considerations in AI. He assured that UNESCO is committed to supporting Vietnam by providing guidance on ethical practices in AI and maintaining integrity in research.
