University of Malaya plans high-tech education center in China

  • The University of Malaya (UM) is in the planning stages of creating a global education center with a focus on advanced fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G technology, e-commerce, green economy, digital economy, and high-end manufacturing in China. UM has expressed its desire to establish training facilities on its campus, collaborating with prominent multinational industries or Chinese companies in similar sectors. This initiative follows a courtesy visit by a UM delegation, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, to the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, OuYang Yujing, at the Embassy of China in Malaysia.

As per the statement, the discussions during the meeting revolved around the possibility of establishing a government-to-government memorandum of understanding in higher education between the University of Malaya (UM) and the Chinese authorities. This visit played a pivotal role in UM's continuous endeavors to enhance connections with prestigious universities in China. The positive meeting between Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan and His Excellency Ouyang Yujing signified a significant achievement, as UM became the inaugural Malaysian university to visit the Embassy of China under his leadership.

"He conveyed robust backing for UM, envisioning that partnerships in higher education between Malaysia and China will thrive, particularly during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of their bilateral relations in 2024", said His Excellency. The University of Malaya, situated in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a public research university. It stands as the oldest and most prestigious educational institution in Malaysia, being the sole university in the newly independent Malaya. Over the years, UM has produced five prime ministers of Malaysia, as well as numerous other influential figures in politics, business, and culture on a national scale.
