Ulsan Institute to Advocate for Science-Gifted School

  • The Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) is gearing up to introduce a specialized educational initiative: a science-gifted school. This endeavour stems from a recent announcement by the Korea Science and Creativity Foundation regarding the establishment of the Ulsan Science and Creativity School. The proposal for this school aligns with UNIST's mission to identify and nurture exceptionally talented students in the realm of science.

To ensure the viability of this project, UNIST plans to conduct a thorough analysis of its feasibility through a forthcoming service. This evaluation, set to commence this month, will assess the necessity and suitability of establishing a science-gifted school under the UNIST umbrella. The Ministry of Science and ICT has allocated substantial funds for similar feasibility studies across other regions, including Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Chungnam.

The primary objective behind UNIST's initiative is twofold: to unearth and develop scientific prodigies while concurrently preventing the exodus of local talent. Drawing inspiration from existing models like the science gifted schools at KAIST and the forthcoming project at GIST, UNIST aims to create an environment conducive to nurturing future scientific leaders.

However, realizing this vision necessitates legislative adjustments. Specifically, amendments to the Ulsan Science and Technology Act are required to pave the way for the establishment of such a specialized educational institution.

In response to this imperative, Kim Ki-hyun, a member of the National Assembly representing Nam-gu-eul, Ulsan, has pledged swift action. He intends to introduce a bill aimed at providing the necessary legal framework for the establishment of science-gifted schools. Furthermore, he aims to secure adequate funding in the upcoming national budget cycle, contingent upon the outcomes of the feasibility study.

In essence, UNIST's endeavour to establish a science-gifted school underscores its commitment to fostering scientific excellence and retaining local talent. Through strategic planning, legislative support, and financial investment, it aspires to create a nurturing ecosystem where budding scientists can thrive and contribute to the advancement of society.
