UAEU launches SDGs Research Programme

  • The "Plant the Emirates" initiative offers a crucial platform for students and researchers to explore various sustainable agricultural practices and contribute to efforts in environmental conservationThe United Arab Emirates University launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Research Programme to support the "Plant the Emirates" initiative.

    The program aims to raise awareness about United Nations SDGs with UAEU students and community, as well as seed funding for student research initiatives under faculty mentorship which ensures that solutions are resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.

    By the SDGs Research Programme, we look forward to enabling our students to take the helm of carrying out innovative research that supports the 'Plant the Emirates' initiative. We hope to sustain a greener tomorrow, strengthen climate resilience, and build stronger communities through research that has both immediate relevance to the solutions needed today.

    He said the 'Plant the Emirates' project presents an important opportunity for students and researchers to seek studies on sustainable agriculture and contribute to the conservation of nature.

    "In the first edition of this call, we will fund and assist 25 research projects conducted by students by giving them resources to fuel change", said Prof. Alraeesi.

    The call for the 2024/2025 SDGs cycle encourages student-led research initiatives that are in close alignment with 'Plant the Emirates' aims to reinvigorate and stimulate the agricultural sector of the UAE.

    Advanced technologies in AI, drones, and IoT will be used as part of the research to make the process more efficient.The submissions have to be in total alignment with the 'Plant the Emirates' campaign, focused on the following SDGs number SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

    Each research team will comprise of four undergraduates plus one faculty member functioning as a PI.
