Sri Lanka's educational system is prepared to advance fully in STEAM

  • The STEAM education system is being used aiming to offer an exciting learning opportunity with hands-on activities under the new educational transformational change, Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said. He said that the new STEAM education method is used by the new educational transformational changes to take the students beyond the school classroom and the tutoring class aiming to give the opportunity to get an inspiring education through practical activities. The Education Minister Premajayantha said that he is eager to open new avenues for the revival of the old technical skills that existed in Sri Lanka in the pre-independence era. The Minister made these comments while participating in a programme to promote the STEAM education system among students at the National Institute of Education (NIE).

The developed countries of the world have developed and used this new education system, which was first started in the world under the name of ‘STEM’ education under the main subjects of science, technology, engineering knowledge and mathematics. But later the STEM converted to STEAM with the addition of Arts. He said that the STEAM education system, used in most countries, has been able to earn a very high percentage of gross national income in a short period of time.

“Due to our delay in updating with these new trends, education in this country and the entire country including the economy have been lagging behind for many decades”, the Minister added. He also said that the basic foundation for starting a sustainable programme to effectively implement this new STEAM education concept in the school system has been laid.
