Saudi Universities Introduces Double Majors and Minors in Education

  • The initiative involves introducing various models in Saudi universities, including minors, double majors, and other models that will be implemented gradually to undergo review, evaluation, quality control, and alignment with developmental requirements and the needs of the job market. Several universities in the Kingdom, in collaboration with the Council of Universities' Affairs, have commenced the launch and implementation of the Self-Designated Academic Degrees initiative. This initiative is part of the Human Capacity Development Program, covering various specialities.

    Dr. Basam Al-Bassam, the Secretary-General of the Council, clarified that the initiative is designed to align educational outcomes with the requirements of the labour market, aiming to enhance the preparedness of youth for employment and improve the effectiveness of educational outcomes. He stated, "The initiative enables students to vary their study plans and opt for multiple specializations based on their interests and academic preferences". This helps to enrich their knowledge and skills, ultimately boosting their readiness to enter the job market in accordance with global educational standards.

    The initiative encompasses the introduction of various models in Saudi universities, including minors and double majors, as well as other models that will be progressively implemented to undergo thorough review, evaluation, quality control, and alignment with developmental requirements and labour market demands. The initial phase of the initiative has been initiated by universities such as King Abdulaziz University, King Faisal University, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Al-Qassim University, and the Saudi Electronic University.
