Malaysia Enhances Research Collaboration with Russia to Fortify Higher Education Links

  • Malaysia’s Higher Education Ministry is significantly boosting its partnership with Russia to advance research and innovation, marking a pivotal development in strengthening educational ties between the two countries.

Datuk Dr. Megat Sany Megat Ahmad Supian, Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) of the ministry, highlighted Malaysia's commitment to increasing scholarships, research collaborations, and knowledge exchange with Russia through the Joint Russia-Malaysia Commission for Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation (JCESTC).

“Our ministry is co-chairing the JCESTC with our Russian colleagues, with a focus on higher education”, Dr. Megat Sany told Bernama following the 13th ASEAN Education Ministers’ Meeting (ASED) and associated gatherings. The forthcoming JCESTC meeting, set for October 9-11 in Russia, will address topics such as student exchange, innovation partnerships, and internship opportunities for Malaysian students.

During the ASED meetings, Dr. Megat Sany also emphasized Malaysia's enthusiasm for collaborating with ASEAN partners to advance national development. He stressed the importance of improving the global rankings of Malaysia's public higher education institutions as a strategy to secure more research grants.

“Currently, Malaysia has five research universities ranked within the top 200 of the QS World University Rankings 2025. We are particularly proud of Universiti Malaya, ranked 60th globally, alongside four other top 200 universities. This strong academic position enhances our ability to attract grants, foster international collaborations, and expand student exchange programs with countries such as the United States, Japan, China, South Korea, and Russia”, he said.
