The Salvation Army Ipoh Children’s Home raised approximately RM2,500 through the sale of fruit cakes to fund the education of children at the home. The initiative, which took place over Christmas, aimed to support the children's schooling for the upcoming year.
The charity effort began during the Pinji Carnival in Ipoh, Perak, last December. However, despite the four-day event, sales were initially poor, leaving over 40 boxes of fruit cakes unsold. In a bid to make the most of the leftover cakes, the home decided to distribute them to other welfare centres to spread the Christmas joy.
To cover the costs of the cakes, the home turned to social media, appealing for kind-hearted individuals to sponsor the remaining cakes. The response was swift, with all the cakes being 'adopted' within two hours. Arrangements were made to deliver the cakes to various centres on Christmas Eve.
The fruit cakes were sent to Handicap Children’s Welfare Home, Yayasan Latihan Insan Istimewa Ipoh, and Lovely Home for Old Folks. Additionally, the home prepared eight sets of rice packs, drinks, and fruit cakes for the homeless. A group of 20 children from the home’s Carol Singing Team also visited the centres to spread holiday cheer through Christmas carols.
Home assistant manager Monnie Chang emphasized the importance of teaching the children the value of giving, even when they come from underprivileged backgrounds. "It’s more blessed to give than to receive", she said, noting that this activity helped the children experience the joy of helping others, making the holiday season more meaningful.
