Egypt's cabinet has given its approval to join the UNESCO convention that recognizes Higher Education degrees in Arab States

  • The Egyptian Cabinet approved  a presidential draft decree, paving the way for Egypt's accession to the UNESCO's "Revised Convention on the Recognition of Studies, Diplomas, and Degrees in Higher Education in the Arab States". This significant development aims to streamline the recognition of degrees earned by Egyptian graduates in countries that have signed the convention. The revised convention was adopted in Paris, France, in February 2022 and includes Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, and Yemen, according to UNESCO’s website.

Egypt’s accession to the convention allows students holding certificates from Egyptian universities to have their degrees recognized by the Arab states that have signed the convention, read the cabinet’s statement. The convention also promotes international cooperation in the field of higher education, including the recognition of degrees, which remains a strategic goal for governments in the region, added the cabinet.

The recognition of higher qualifications will attract more foreign students to pursue their higher education degrees in Egypt, the cabinet continued.According to recent figures by the Higher Education Ministry, the number of international students applying for undergraduate programmes in Egyptian universities increased by 33 per cent in the academic year 2022/2023 compared to the previous academic year. The number of students in the 2022/2023 academic year reached 34,407, up from 25,701 a year earlier.
