Baguio students awarded for excellence in Spoken English: Philippines

  • In the 2023, English Proficiency Index conducted by EF Education First, an international education company, Baguio City has emerged as the leading English speaking and listening region in the Philippines. Baguio achieved a score of 619, securing the top position nationally and surpassing other well-performing cities such as Dumaguete and Davao. Additionally, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), near Baguio, topped the regional rankings in the country with a score of 616, ahead of other high-performing regions like Davao and Eastern Visayas.

The Philippines has maintained its 20th position out of 113 countries, with the same overall score of 578 compared to the previous year. This ranking signifies that the country possesses a high level of English proficiency, placing just behind Singapore in Asia and globally ranking second only to The Netherlands. The index further revealed that the age group with the highest English proficiency in the Philippines was between 26 to 30 years old. EF Education First, famous for its study abroad, language learning programs, and cultural exchanges, offers these insights to measure English-language proficiency in non-native English-speaking nations.

The 2023 EF English Proficiency Index is a comprehensive evaluation that assesses the English language proficiency of 2.2 million participants from 113 countries. It relies on the EF Standard English Test, which evaluates reading and listening skills in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference levels. Mayor Magalong expressed pride in achieving this status and commended the efforts of educators, principals, professors, teachers, and non-academic personnel, both in the public and private sectors. He acknowledged their well-executed efforts in delivering quality education to students, not only in English but also in all facets of learning.
