The Higher Education Ministry in Malaysia states, the school leavers from Pelting Jaya, who receives offers of admission to public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, and public skills training institutes (ILKA) are made on the basis of merit. It mentioned that their merit mark was based on 90% of their academic achievements and 10% of their extracurricular efforts.
The ministry reports that 61% (144,911 applicants) of those who applied for the recently announced 2023–2024 academic intake for holders of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) were ultimately given offers to continue their education. The following is based on a total of 239,609 UPUOnline applications from SPM graduates, a rise of 1.03% from the previous intake's 237,161 applicants.
“Of that number, a total of 79,668 candidates were offered seats at public universities while 65,243 candidates were offered to polytechnics, community colleges and ILKA, which provides a TVET-focused study programme”, it said in an announcement released today (July 7).
Out of the 208,833 qualified candidates, 130,819 (62.6%) were Malay, East Malaysian (Sabah and Sarawak), and Orang Asli received offers. In a total of 10,447 qualified candidates, about 50% (5,477 candidates) originated from the Chinese community. Of the 18,525 qualified candidates, offers were made to 8,615 (46.5%) Indians and people of other ethnic groups. For the 2023–2024 academic year, 500 academic programs—143 certificate level, 47 foundations, 309 diplomas, and one bachelor's degree course—have been made available.
According to the ministry, those who missed out on offers for the reason of not meeting the requirements, general and/or special requirements of the study program, a lack of openings, particularly for competitive programs, failing to pass an interview or screening test for programs that require it or low merit. The Higher Education Ministry said, “A total of 164,028 out of 403,637 SPM 2022 candidates did not apply for UPUOnline due to several factors”.
The criteria include enrolling in Form Six, matriculating in universities or other private higher education institutions, getting scholarships from the Public Service Department or Mara, it was stated. Candidates can still monitor the progress of their applications on the official websites of each school. Once the applicant accepted the offer, the relevant institutions will send offer letters on July 8. The offer must be accepted between July 8 and July 16. From now until July 16 at 5 p.m., there are ten days during which appeals may be submitted.
