US Initiative Boosts Female Entrepreneurship in Turkmenistan

  • In Ashgabat, the inaugural Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) program in Turkmenistan reached its culmination as participants presented their business proposals to a panel of experts. Launched by the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan in collaboration with the Union of Economists of Turkmenistan in March, the event marked a significant milestone in fostering entrepreneurial endeavors among women in the region.

According to statements from the U.S. Embassy, the 'graduation' ceremony marked the apex of a rigorous three-month journey for participants, which included engaging in an online business course crafted by Arizona State University's Thunderbird School of Global Management. The program also entailed regular in-person sessions and the meticulous crafting of comprehensive business plans.

AWE, a program initiated by the U.S. State Department, equips women entrepreneurs with the essential tools, networks, and opportunities vital for initiating and expanding prosperous businesses. The inaugural cohort of 50 Turkmen entrepreneurs, emerging from the program, now integrates into a thriving global network of more than 25,000 AWE alumnae, fostering a dynamic community of shared experiences and support.

Opening the event, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Vaida Vidugiris said, “We are so pleased that this year, Turkmenistan joined more than 100 participating countries of AWE. I am especially proud that this program took place not only in Ashgabat but also in Dashoguz, Mary, and Turkmenabat, where we have our American Corners. It underscores our belief in the untapped potential of women entrepreneurs who, with the right support and resources, can transform economies, uplift communities, and inspire future generations”.
