President
stablished in 1995, Handong Global University emerged during a period marked by the rise of information technology and globalization. With the Internet's commercialization and the formation of the World Trade Organization, the founders envisioned a new approach to higher education to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century. Departing from the traditional model, the university allows students to enter without declared majors, requiring them to explore various courses in their first year before choosing a major in the second year. Handong Global University emphasizes practical and creative skills, incorporating team learning and in-class discussions. The institution prioritizes character and moral development, offering community leadership training and conducting exams without supervision based on a student honor code.
The university has been actively involved in international initiatives, fostering a global educational environment through student exchange programs with foreign universities. In 2002, the Handong International Law School (HILS) was established, becoming the first Asian institution to train international lawyers. To date, 589 HILS graduates have passed the U.S. bar exam. In 2007, Handong became the first Korean host institute of the University Twinning and Networking (UNITWIN) program designated by UNESCO for Capacity Building of Sustainable Development in developing countries. Additionally, Handong Global University joined the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) in 2010, becoming one of ten global hub universities within UNAI. The university hosts sessions such as Global Entrepreneurship Training and contributes to international development through volunteer service projects. Handong remains committed to preparing students for a rapidly changing global landscape.
