University academic programs should be in line with current market developments: Ex-UGC chairman

  • Future universities will need to advance the boundaries of knowledge, create knowledge based on solutions, integrate socially and economically disadvantaged groups into the mainstream of higher education, ensure quality education and academic excellence, and prepare talented workers for the modern world. This was said by Prof. Ved Prakash, a former head of the University Grants Commission (UGC), during a national conference on "Future Universities" at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in this city. In his inspiring speech as chief guest and keynote speaker, prof. Ved Prakash stated that higher education is currently experiencing crises of leadership, governance, resources, and ideals. Vice-chancellors today must also be excellent managers due to the fiscal problems of running institutions. He asserted that universities must also address the issues raised by socioeconomic diversity.

    Prof. Ved Prakash mentioned that the majority of public funding goes to the world's research-intensive universities. He provided a thorough history of the evolution of higher education in India from 1947 to the present. He emphasized the importance of higher education and instructors in the change of society, the growth of nations, and the advancement of mankind by quoting illustrious scientists, academic leaders, famous academics, and international functionaries. Prof. Rajbir Singh, vice chancellor of MDU, stated in his presidential address that outstanding academic institutions are built on their people resources.

    Future universities, according to Prof. Rajbir Singh, would require collaborative education with national and international links, technology-enabled teaching and learning customization of curricula to meet global requirements, a student-centric approach, and a focus on the development of critical thinking, creativity, and innovation. He said that MDU will serve as a task force for the university's futuristic makeover. Prof. B. Narasimhan, director of the internal quality assurance cell (IQAC), gave the opening remarks. academic affairs dean The vote of gratitude was given by Prof. Surendra Kumar.
