Turkey recently introduced 'Sports Education' in the Curriculum

  • In a forward-looking initiative, the Education Ministry of Turkey has introduced a 'sports education' curriculum specifically designed for high school students. Aimed at enhancing overall well-being and comprehensive development, students now have the option to choose sports courses as electives. Approved by the Board of Education and Discipline, the curriculum provides a selection of 19 diverse sports, enabling students to make choices aligned with their preferences. This effort aims to cultivate a sports-oriented culture while honing students' research skills and physical qualities, including speed, endurance, flexibility, and coordination.

The recently implemented curriculum divides sports into two classifications: individual sports and team sports. Individual sports offer 15 choices, including badminton, cycling, boxing, fencing, and swimming, whereas team sports comprise 4 options, including globally recognized sports like basketball and soccer. This categorization ensures that students with varying preferences have a diverse array of choices. Furthermore, the program is structured to provide more than just physical training. It aims to enrich students' comprehension of sports, encourage collaboration, and refine communication skills.

The curriculum also incorporates an examination of the historical evolution of sports, both on a global scale and within Turkey. This approach aims to instil students with a sense of inspiration drawn from the rich heritage of sports throughout history. To safeguard the students' health, the school administration will advise health check-ups at the commencement of each academic year. Additionally, students are urged to participate in physical activities and sports outside of their classrooms, encouraging an active lifestyle. For those demonstrating exceptional talent, guidance towards sports clubs will be offered to further develop their skills. Through this comprehensive strategy, the Education Ministry of Turkey is not only endorsing sportsmanship but also nurturing potential future sports stars.
