Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore has introduced the first-ever generative artificial intelligence design laboratory within a polytechnic setting. This innovative laboratory is set to transform design education by incorporating generative artificial intelligence into the curriculum. Furnished with state-of-the-art technology, the laboratory offers students a platform to delve into and acquire skills in applying generative artificial intelligence across different design disciplines, including clothing, products, videos, and films. The initiative involves five emerging technologies that enable students to combine objects, images, or hand-drawn patterns with artificial intelligence, facilitating the creation of initial visual design concepts.
The key purpose behind setting up this advanced laboratory is to integrate cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence tools and design software, into the design education curriculum seamlessly. The goal is to improve students' competence in artificial intelligence and elevate their creative abilities. Within the lab, students have the opportunity for practical, hands-on learning using various artificial intelligence tools, enhancing their creative adaptability. The facility functions as a space for students to investigate and put into practice the concepts and principles of utilizing artificial intelligence for rapidly and effectively delivering design solutions across various disciplines.
Around 1,000 design students are anticipated to gain from the laboratory in its inaugural year. Notably, the laboratory is not exclusive to Temasek Polytechnic students; it is accessible to the public, allowing industry professionals and local secondary school students to directly experience the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence in design. Temasek Polytechnic encourages public engagement by inviting them to participate in an event showcasing the laboratory's technologies. This event offers attendees an opportunity to explore the various technologies featured in the laboratory. Concurrently, Ngee Ann Polytechnic will host an open day, featuring highlights such as the introduction of two new professional courses in the Department of Information Technology. Starting April this year, students pursuing the Data Science Professional Diploma can choose to specialize in either Generative Artificial Intelligence or Data Engineering in their second year.
