Participants at a New York City symposium on education emphasized the significance of cross-cultural comprehension. Scholars and attendees, predominantly hailing from the United States, China, and Canada, gathered at the event to commemorate the centennial of the International Institute of Teachers College at Columbia University.
Kerry Ann O'Meara, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of the Teachers College, remarked that, after the establishment of the International Institute of Teachers College, we are confronted with significant uncertainty. She emphasized the necessity of international exchange, understanding, and collaboration for our future. Min Weifang, the former party secretary of Peking University, suggested that, given the current global circumstances, the most meaningful way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the International Institute is to continue and expand educational exchanges while fostering stronger connections among educators worldwide and the general public.
Amra Sabic-El-Rayess, the Associate Professor of Practice and Founding Director of the International Interfaith Research Lab at Teachers College, Columbia University, stated that our discussions today, along with many previously delivered remarks, focus on establishing connections and promoting cross-cultural understanding for the greater good. George Geh, CEO of the China Institute, a non-profit organization committed to enhancing understanding and fostering trust between the United States and China, acknowledged the challenges in current US-China relations and emphasized the need to look beyond the disruptions. Huang Ping, the Chinese Consul General in New York, highlighted the role of education in solidifying the foundation and advancing the growth of China-US relations.
