NCHR Partners with Universities for Human Rights Education

  • The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) has entered into a Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various higher education institutions (HEIs) to advance human rights education for university students. The recent MoUs were signed with Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Islamabad, and Fatima Jinnah Women’s University, Rawalpindi. This partnership reflects the mutual dedication of both organizations to empower individuals, cultivate a culture of respect, equality, and justice among students, and prevent human rights violations through education. The initiative aligns with the pivotal role of education and awareness in safeguarding and promoting human rights.

Chairperson Rabiya Javeri Agha of the NCHR expressed, "Through collaboration with universities and educational institutions, the NCHR seeks to make a lasting impression, nurturing a society that esteems and champions human rights principles. We anticipate the establishment of a more equitable and inclusive society through the widespread promotion of human rights literacy". She highlighted the NCHR's acknowledgement of the pivotal role played by human rights institutions in developing and implementing human rights education programs. Agha emphasized the Commission's active involvement in establishing partnerships with reputable universities and educational institutions nationwide to achieve this objective.

The NCHR chairperson emphasized the significance of this partnership to the NCHR's human rights education program, aimed at building knowledge, transforming attitudes and behaviours, and fostering a culture of tolerance and peace. A team from the NCHR, led by Member Balochistan Prof. Farkhanda Aurangzeb, recently conducted several meetings with key stakeholders in various universities. Two meetings were held at the Higher Education Commission (HEC), where Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad stressed the renewal of an MoU to enhance collaboration in human rights education. Productive discussions also took place with Professor Dr. Tahir Khalily, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Islamabad, and Dr. Uzaira Rafique, Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi.
