Iran, Russia Bolster Academic Ties

  • Tehran's Allameh Tabatabai University and Russia's Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration signed a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to bolster scientific cooperation.

The MoU helps to cooperate over subjects that include humanities and social sciences. The agreement comprises key parts like exchange of scientific data, publications, and educational resources, and publication of joint research as well as facilitating participation in academic activities. There will be joint educational courses alongside arrangements for information on international events as well as the exchange of professors, researchers, and students to work on collaborative projects.

Along with the memorandum of understanding, there was a recent agreement between Iran and Russia that set up a new subcommittee on scientific and technological cooperation. The Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia, Ayrat Gatiyatov, declared the will to have the first meeting of the joint committee taking place in Russia. As he said, it is necessary to deepen research and educational cooperation between the two countries.

During the sixth meeting of top university leaders from both countries that took place last year at Moscow State University, a number of important outcomes were achieved, on which several memorandums of understanding were issued. At the moment, Iran and Russia implement 15 joint research projects in the sphere of materials science and biotechnology with estimations of $40,000 to $70,000 for three years.

Gatiyatov also touched upon the problems associated with more than 8,000 Iranian students currently in Russia, particularly those in the medical fields, as they face problems related to degree recognition. He hoped such problems would be solved to facilitate smoother processes in the near future.

Iran and Russia are nearing a final agreement on mutual recognition of the degrees received at higher education institutions, Iran's ambassador advisor in Russia said, Hadi Goudarzi announced. This concerns bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees, with the agreement currently standing at over 90 percent and signed shortly, on the governmental level.

Furthermore, with Iran entering BRICS, a union formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, academics and scientists expect further academic and scientific cooperation frameworks under this umbrella. Goudarzi pointed out that several meetings in the course of the year were planned to decide upon possible treaties concerning cooperation.
