Implementation of NEP 2020: UGC launches program to train 15 lakh higher education instructors

  • The University Grants Commission has initiated a capacity-building program for the holistic development of 15 lakh higher education instructors and the instillation of ethical and human values by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. 111 institutions across India have been selected as Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres as part of the UGC's Malaviya Mission-Teacher Training initiative (MMTTC). "At these institutes, instructors will be trained." Some of the programs are not available online, while others are. "We intend to train all 15 lakh higher education instructors over the next two to three years," said a UGC official. the goal is to increase educational quality at all levels by infusing quality and excellence in teachers and teaching. The announcement of the mission was made on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. "It would also ensure holistic development of instructors and learners through the instillation of ethical and human values as ingrained in Indian culture, as well as the development of multidisciplinary and critical thinking abilities in them," a UGC official said. a two-week online capacity-building program for faculty members has been methodically crafted to coincide with the essential aspects of NEP 2020. The NEP 2020 introduced by the NDA administration replaces the Congress-era education strategy in existence since 1986. It has been in operation since 2020.

The Malaviya Mission-Teacher Training program is organized around the following themes: holistic education, Indian knowledge systems, academic leadership, governance, research, skill development, inclusivity, technology integration, learning objectives identification, and evaluation. It prioritizes faculty professional development by providing a forward-looking orientation across various themes. In addition to faculty development, the curriculum emphasizes the faculty's role in institutional development, which is an important aspect of improving higher education quality. The training program, according to officials, mixes an India-centric ethos with a global perspective, arming professors with Indian values and modern technologies to handle the developing landscape of higher education. For the capacity-building programs, a special portal for faculty members has been registered. "The adoption of innovative approaches to curricular transactions, teaching-learning, pedagogical tactics, and assessment methods indicated in the NEP 2020 would be possible through Malaviya Mission and would be best carried forward through MMTT centers.
