Four Filipino High School Students win International Awards in Science

  • Four Filipino high school students have garnered international recognition for their achievements in science, according to the Department of Education (DepEd). The DepEd announced the following awardees: Michaela Rentuza, Mikaella Macabata, and Wesly Secuya from Cebu City National Science High School, who won fourth place in the Cellular and Molecular Biology Division at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Their project, titled "In vitro and in silico Evaluation of Embryogenesis Inhibition Activity of Ethanolic Extracts of Chico (Manilkara zapota) Bark Against Gastrointestinal Strongyle Eggs," earned them this accolade. The event took place in Los Angeles, California, USA. In addition to the recognition, the trio received a $500 cash prize.

Meanwhile, Arnon Guinto from Tarlac National High School was awarded the National Geographic Society’s Excellence in Geography and Geospatial Science Award. Guinto's project involved developing a rainfall-predictive system capable of identifying flood-prone areas in Tarlac City. She received this prestigious award on May 17 at the ISEF.

The DepEd expressed pride in these students' accomplishments, highlighting their contributions to scientific discovery and innovation. "Let us continue to ignite our passion for exploration and creation for a better future," the DepEd added.

These awards underscore the talent and dedication of Filipino students in the field of science. The success of Rentuza, Macabata, Secuya, and Guinto at an international level brings honour to the Philippines and serves as an inspiration to other young scientists in the country. Their achievements not only highlight the importance of science education but also demonstrate the potential for Filipino students to excel on the global stage.

This recognition from prestigious organizations like the Regeneron ISEF and the National Geographic Society emphasizes the significance of supporting and nurturing young talent in the sciences, ensuring a brighter and more innovative future.
