Education dept directs varsities to extend admission deadline

  • The Karnataka higher education department has written to universities to ensure that admission deadlines are extended for students from the northeastern state. The under-secretary to government has written to the higher education department and marked all university vice-chancellors, department of collegiate and technical education, Karnataka Examinations Authority and Karnataka State Higher Education Council, saying that all possible assistance has to be provided to students from Manipur. As the northeast is facing a law-and-order crisis and internet services are temporarily suspended to prevent spread of hate videos and fake news, students of Manipur are not able to submit application forms online for admissions. Therefore, the authorities have been asked to extend the deadlines for online and offline applications. It may be recalled that the department of school education and literacy had earlier issued a circular to schools that students from Manipur should not be asked for any documents like transfer certificate or any other relevant papers required for admission. The department had instructed all state board affiliated schools to admit students without demanding any documents like transfer certificate.

Admissions were to be given after taking an undertaking from parents about the grade in which their wards were currently studying in their state. The directions were applicable for pre-university courses too. Around 187 students from Manipur have joined various schools in the state after this circular was issued. Of them, 60 have been admitted in PU colleges. As per the department of school education and literacy, of the students who have joined the schools, 51 are in Bengaluru Urban north, 52 in Bengaluru Urban south, six in Udupi, four in Mysuru, three each in Ballari, Bidar and Bengaluru Rural, two each in Dakshina Kannada, and one each in Sirsi, Dharwad and Kodagu. Of these, 110 students have joined private schools, 10 government schools, six aided schools and one Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bengaluru north. Among PU colleges, St Mary's PU College, Kolar received 22 students and St Aloysius College, Bengaluru South has admitted 21. St Mary's Composite PU College received eight students.
