Dr. Sameer Arbat, an interventional pulmonologist affiliated with One Healthcare in India, received the prestigious 'APSR Assembly Education Award 2023' at the APSR 2023 Congress in Singapore, held from November 16 to 19. Presented by Dr. Woo Jin Kim, the assembly head from South Korea, this award acknowledges Dr. Arbat's remarkable contributions to the realms of environmental and occupational health as well as epidemiology.
Dr. Arbat's pioneering research focused on women residing in urban slums exposed to household air pollution (HAP) stemming from the combustion of solid fuels like wood, cow dung, and charcoal. His investigation, conducted through an extensive questionnaire, revealed that individuals exposed to HAP demonstrated a higher prevalence of symptoms and ailments, such as coughing, breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and skin rashes. Additionally, the study underscored a significant association between HAP exposure and obstructive airway diseases like Asthma and COPD.
In expressing his gratitude, Dr. Sameer Arbat remarked that an international award not only recognizes the excellence of one's work but also serves as a substantial morale booster. He extended special appreciation to Leena Buddhe, the director at the Centre for Sustainable Development (CFSD), for collaborating on this crucial research pertaining to the health of women in Nagpur city's urban slums. Dr. Arbat conveyed deep appreciation for the unwavering support and encouragement received from his mentors and colleagues. The APSR Environmental & Occupational Health and Epidemiology Assembly aims to propel research initiatives, share expert insights, and educate emerging professionals about environmental and occupational health concerns.
