China Releases List of 184 AI Education Bases in Schools

  • China's Ministry of Education has released a roster of 184 primary and secondary school bases dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) education across the nation, spanning regions such as North China's Beijing, Tianjin, East China's Shanghai, Shandong, and Jiangsu provinces, as well as South China's Guangdong Province. The objective is to systematically promote AI education on a national scale. In specific areas like Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and select provinces, six schools have been identified in the published list. Responding to the swift advancements in AI technology, some schools have initiated AI education programs in recent years. These programs aim to encourage students to delve into the field, fostering a deeper understanding of AI concepts and cultivating their creative abilities to analyze data and recognize patterns based on AI algorithms.

An illustration of this is Wenzhou No 22 Senior Middle School situated in Zhejiang Province in East China, established in 2002. The school has consistently been a pioneer in information technology nationwide, earning recognition as one of the initial "100 digital campus demonstration schools" in China. According to Ding Die, the vice principal of Wenzhou No 22 Senior Middle School, the institution has been delving into AI education for nearly five years. The school has seamlessly integrated AI-related curriculum standards into the realms of information technology and general technology, embedding course content and practical applications within the dedicated AI education space on campus.

The facility integrates design, teaching, and operations, furnished with 3D printers, laser engraving machines, high-end computers, and other equipment, as outlined by Ding. He mentioned that the school plans to continually enhance AI courses and promote their widespread adoption among students. Additionally, efforts will be made to strengthen the ties between students and AI projects at universities, providing clearer career planning for students throughout their learning journey. Shanghai Luwan Senior High School has also actively engaged in AI education initiatives and exploration in recent years. With the national initiative to establish AI bases, students will have the chance to immerse themselves in authentic technical content, actively participating in and acquiring knowledge in this domain, according to Zhang Xiaojun, a teacher.
