Indonesia is one of the most vivid economies in Southeast Asia that has a great potential to grow within the education sector. This country has lots of young populations with a demand for quality education; therefore, it is on its way to becoming a center for educational development. The government strategically focuses on upgrading educational infrastructure and access to learning. Recently, the Indonesian government initiated the ambitious 'Free Nutritious Meal Program', meant to combat malnutrition and encourage healthy eating in students from underserved communities. This program forms the centerpiece of President Prabowo Subianto's election campaign for 2024, and it will benefit more than 82 million students and pregnant mothers across the country over the next five years.
The path to educational equity in Indonesia was greatly paved by pioneering women who lobbied for female education and leadership. The journey to womanhood is often complex by societal expectations and identity challenges, particularly in professional environments where ‘feminine qualities,’ such as being soft-spoken and prioritizing others, conflict with the assertiveness demanded in leadership roles. In this respect, women in educational leadership have faced numerous challenges in understanding effective leadership, often requiring mentorship from other women. Programs such as Women Who Lead under ‘Eduro Learning’ emphasize the systemic changes that are required to bring more women into leadership positions in education. As the call for gender equality in leadership roles grows louder, new evidence suggests that female school leaders tend to adopt practices that foster more conducive learning environments. In the current edition, ‘Top 10 Women Education Leaders in Schools from Indonesia- 2025’, Asia Education Review brings to you a list of acknowledgeable women education leaders in Indonesia who are known to display promising leadership at the school level providing better education and keep students motivated to learn.
