Cambodia Leads ASEAN in Pioneering Science, Technology and Innovation Summit

  • This week in Siem Reap province, Cambodia initiates two regional gatherings focusing on science, technology, and innovation (STI). The aim is to bolster collaboration among regional stakeholders and propel the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action on STI (APASTI) 2016-2025. Additionally, the meetings will work on drafting the action plan for 2026-2035. The 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on STI (AMMSTI-20) and the 85th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on STI (COSTI-85) are scheduled from June 3 to 7, alongside other relevant assemblies, as stated in a press release.

The 60th Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Science and Technology Infrastructure and Resources Development (SCIRD-60) and the 16th Board of Advisory Council Meeting began on June 3. “We are honoured to host AMMSTI-20, ASEAN COSTI-85 and related meetings as they serve as important platforms for regional collaboration in science and technology”, said Keo Socheat, National Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation (NISTI). “As the host, Cambodia is committed to advancing ASEAN’s scientific capabilities and fostering innovation for sustainable development”, he added.

APASTI serves as a strategic roadmap designed to enhance cooperation in science, technology, and innovation within the ASEAN region. It emphasizes critical areas of action, including boosting research and development capabilities, facilitating technology transfer and innovation, enhancing science and technology education, and nurturing partnerships with the private sector, as outlined in the release. “The ultimate goal of APASTI is to harness the potential of STI to drive sustainable economic growth and development in the region”, it said.

Throughout the weeklong meetings, there will be discussions among partners on cooperation projects and presentations covering various topics, including the Experts Group on Metrology, the ASEAN Young Scientists Network, and the ASEAN Network on Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy. Delegates from the 10 ASEAN member states, as well as the ASEAN Secretariat, will be present, along with Timor-Leste participating as an observer. They will engage in dialogues addressing crucial issues and advancements in STI infrastructure and resource development within the region. Prime Minister Hun Manet is slated to deliver a keynote address during the opening of AMMSTI-20 on June 7th.
